Resources to Historicize Recent Events

We are happy to re-launch four teaching resources we compiled in 2020 and 2021 as the United States experienced a global pandemic, the protests against police brutality after the murder of George Floyd, and an attempted insurrection in response to the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. Each resource guide identifies primary source materials, curriculum support materials, background reading, and other sources to help understand the historical context of these events.

Please note that these resources have not been updated since their initial publications in the years listed below, but efforts have been made to ensure that the links and files are still working. If they are not, feel free to reach out at cml@gc.cuny.edu.

ASHP has many other resources available that connect history to current events, including materials developed in 2022 as part of the project Past/Present: Linking History to Current Events, funded by the American Historical Association. See SHEC for collections of primary sources with linked teaching activities on topics including Environmental (In)JusticeIndigenous ResistanceEconomic Inequality, and Incarceration and Prison Labor
