Picturing U.S. History: An Interactive Resource for Teaching with Visual Evidence

Picturing U.S. HistoryThe mission of Picturing U.S. History: An Interactive Resource for Teaching with Visual Evidence is to promote the use of archival visual materials in the humanities classroom. Drawing on the latest scholarship and representing a unique collaboration between historians and art historians, Picturing U.S. History places visual materials at the center of understanding the American past, and demonstrates how archival images can illuminate historical inquiry. Funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the site offers a range of teaching resources including lively online discussions among teachers and scholars about what images mean and how to use them with students; step-by-step interactive lessons for the classroom; book and website reviews; a collection of “favorite images” submitted by leading scholars and teachers; and an annotated guide to the best resources on the web.
