Visual Culture of the American Civil War – A New Resource Website

EmptySleeveThe Visual Culture of the American Civil War website features presentations by historians, art historians, and archivists who participated in a July 2012 National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute for College and University Teachers.

Held at The Graduate Center, City University of New York, the American Social History Project’s two-week institute examined the array of visual media that recorded and disseminated information about the war and how those visual representations shaped Americans’ understanding about the conflict. Each presentation on the website focuses on a particular visual medium, or a theme, and is accompanied by a selection of primary documents, archival images, and a bibliography.

The Visual Culture of the American Civil War website is a special feature of Picturing U.S. History, an interactive resource for teaching with visual evidence.
