Student Voices from WWII and the McCarthy Era

Student VoicesThis oral history website presents life on the American homefront during World War II and the Cold War, heard in the memories of Brooklyn College students. The interviews focus on two episodes: their experiences working on upstate farms during World War II, and the events surrounding the suspension of the college’s student newspaper, the Vanguard, during the early 1950s. Audio excerpts accompany the edited transcripts, and the site also includes resources for conducting and interpreting oral histories. This project was a collaborative City University of New York effort led by Adina Back, Brooklyn College, with support from Gerald Markowitz, John Jay College, and ASHP/CML. A Research Foundation of the City University of New York CUNY Collaborative Incentive Grant provided funding for the project.
