Mission US is an adventure-style online game in which players take on the role of young people during critical moments in U.S. history. The first game, Mission 1: “For Crown or Colony?,” puts the player in the shoes of Nat Wheeler, a 14-year-old printer’s apprentice in 1770 Boston. The second game, Mission 2: “Flight to Freedom” (launching January 2012) is played from the perspective of Lucy, an enslaved girl on a Kentucky plantation in 1848. Designed for middle school students, the game teaches both standards-aligned social history content and historical thinking skills. In addition to the online game, there is an extensive curriculum of classroom activities and primary documents available for download.
Mission US received major funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, with additional funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities. It is produced by THIRTEEN/WNET in partnership with ASHP/CML, Electric Funstuff, and EDC Center for Children and Technology.
